OpenAthens

Get ready for the switch

Our target 'Go Live' date for OpenAthens is December 16th, 2024. We chose this date so we could test and troubleshoot any issues during the term break.

Please look through the checklist below to ensure you are prepared for the transition. Reach out to the library with any questions; we're happy to help.

  1. Review the overview video or document to understand what this change means, what the login screen looks like, how links will be affected, and any potential steps you might need to take. (You can access the transcript of the overview video here.)
  2. Review the 'checking and updating links' tab of this guide to determine if you have saved any URLs which need to be updated. You only need to update links if you use them actively (i.e. they are your only route back to a resource). For faculty, this might be the case if you have links to library resources in your syllabus or course shell. For students, this might be if you saved links back to items in the library but did not also save full-text or citation information. Only the links are changing, so if you saved the full document or related details, you can easily find it again in the library and get a new link later.
  3. If you actively utilize ProQuest's eBook Central book shelf to save content or annotations, or you have a MyEBSCO account, make sure to click on that tab in this guide and follow the instructions. In eBook Central you will need to export the data associated with your account to have as a backup. For MyEBSCO, you can simply merge your accounts after the switch. A librarian can assist with any questions. You will want to make note of your log-in credentials and back-up eBook Central, if needed, before December 16th.
  4. If you currently access Google Scholar through our databases list, you'll instead want to set up the Library Links feature on the public Google Scholar page. Check out our help document to see how.
  5. If you use Zotero, you might need to make a few changes, but we don't expect this to affect most users. Check out the Zotero tab of this guide to learn more.
  6. If you sometimes access scholarly resources on the web, as opposed to going through the library, be sure to review the 'Using OpenAthens on the Web' tab of this guide. Here you will find information about logging directly into publisher websites and details about how to ensure you don't miss anything if you follow this process.
