How to check and update links

  • Keep in mind that in most cases, if you saved an item for personal research, you've likely also saved the full-text or citation details of the work. You only need to update links if they're the only route you have back to a resource. Librarians will assist you in updating any links.
  • Determine if you have saved links back to resources in our library. Faculty, please also check for links to library resources in your syllabi or course shells. These links will have our proxy information in the URL. Here are a few example links with our proxy information highlighted so you know what to look for:

  • If you have any saved links for personal research, make sure you either save 1) the full text or 2) the citation details for the work. This way, when the link stops working moving forward, it will be easy to find the resource again and save a new link if needed. If you saved links back to complete databases or journals, you will need to update those.
  • The library can help you convert your old links into new ones that work with OpenAthens. You only need to do this if: 1) The link is used in a syllabus or course shell or 2) the link is the only connection you have back to the resource or 3) you saved/bookmarked a link back to a full database or journal. If you've saved the full-text, etc. then you should have everything you need. Remember, nothing is disappearing from the library and everything is still findable. It's just the link you'll use to get there that is changing.
